Brainstorming is a common term but one that is not clearly understood. Also, the importance of it may not be recognised. The whole idea of brainstorming is to come up with a solution in creative ways.

Group Brainstorming

Brainstorming is often thought about as being carried out in groups. It allows everybody to have an input into dealing with a problem. It almost fits into the cliché that two heads are better than one. The whole objective of it is that everyone participating in the brainstorming group feels comfortable enough to be able to have some contribution. It is not about evaluating another person’s ideas or looking down upon them.

When Did Brainstorming Come About?

It originated in the advertising industry where one individual was always coming up with ideas for problem solving. This goes back to 1939. The advertising industry is one that is based on the creation of ideas. It can be difficult for one person in this industry to come up with the solutions that are needed to meet the needs of clients. For this reason, an individual by the name of Alex F. Osborne started to coming up with ideas on how to solve the problems. This was the birth of group brainstorming.

Brainstorming Development

From the time of its birth, brainstorming became more acceptable in many other industries. While the methods and techniques used may vary with context, the concept, which is problem solving, generally remains the same. Rather than looking at the negative side of the problem in question, it looks at it in a positive fashion to find creative ideas that can be implemented bring a solution.

Since the brainstorming concept has been implemented in the various industries, new techniques have been developed to help make it an even better exercise.

Some of the variations include the following:

  • Nominal group technique
  • Group passing technique
  • Direct brainstorming
